Can you choose which brands go on your car? Mostly, yes — here's how

Mostly, yes. On Lunar (lunarcar.me), you name the local brands you'd genuinely back, and up to two of your car's four sticker spots are filled from those picks where availability allows. The remaining spots are assigned from paying businesses in your area — and you hold a veto: once a month, you can reject an assigned brand and Lunar swaps it to another car. You'll never be forced to carry something you're not comfortable with, and nothing lewd or provocative goes on anyone's car in the first place. That's the whole deal, and it's deliberately different from both extremes in this industry.

Why it's not 100% your choice — and why that's good for you

A marketplace where drivers only carried their favourite coffee shop would leave most paying businesses with no cars — and a marketplace with no paying businesses pays no drivers. The two-plus-two design keeps the money flowing while keeping you in the loop: your picks anchor the car in brands you like, assignments keep every spot earning its $83.50 a month, and the veto is your escape hatch for a bad fit. How your picks actually work

• At onboarding you name businesses you'd be glad to represent — your gym, your mechanic, the taco place you already tell people about.
• Where those businesses (or close matches) have active campaigns overlapping your driving zone, up to two of your spots fill from that list.
• If none of your picks are advertising yet, all spots fill by assignment — and your picks stay on file for when they join.
• Better yet: tell that business about Lunar. Plenty of drivers have effectively recruited their favourite shop, then ended up carrying it — the most natural match the marketplace can make.

How the veto works in practice

Each month you get one veto on an assigned brand. Use it, and that business moves to another car — its campaign keeps running, your door gets a different sticker. Start to veto and you'll see a one-time +5% offer to keep the sticker instead; take it or leave it, it doesn't loop or pressure. In practice most drivers never veto: assignments are ordinary local businesses — restaurants, clinics, trades — and the content rules screen out anything embarrassing before it reaches a door. But the veto existing is the point: you're a willing carrier, not rented metal.

What you can't choose

Honesty section: you can't demand four specific brands, can't swap assignments endlessly, and can't carry a business whose campaign doesn't overlap your zone — a Tulsa driver can't rep a Vancouver bakery. You also can't carry the same business twice on one car (no car does), and campaign phases run three months, so a sticker you accept is a commitment for the phase, not a whim. If your circumstances genuinely change mid-phase, payouts and campaigns handle it cleanly — the brand re-places to another car and everyone's made whole.

Why control matters more than it looks

Your car says something about you — that's exactly why a sticker on it is worth $83.50 to $100.20 a month per spot to a local business. Advertising that borrowed your paint against your will would be worth less, to everyone: resentful carriers park in garages, quit early, and let stickers peel. Lunar's bet is that a marketplace of willing carriers — picks, vetoes, content rules and all — produces better advertising and steadier income than a fleet of billboards-on-wheels ever could. Your control isn't a perk bolted onto the product. It is the product.
