What Happens If You Sell Your Car Mid-Campaign?
No fees and a clear process: tell Lunar you're changing car, take the stickers off, and the businesses on your doors are rematched. Your new car is set up with its own VIN.
Selling your car mid-campaign is something Lunar plans for — there's no fee, and no awkward contract conversation. Life happens to cars: they get sold, traded in, written off, handed down to a kid heading to college. Once you've accepted a match it isn't an instant exit — you tell us you're changing car, your spots are held for 7 days, and the businesses you were carrying are rematched by Lunar. Your new vehicle is then set up on its own VIN. Here's the whole sequence, including the money questions.
The right order of operations
- Tell Lunar as soon as the sale is real — before the handover, ideally. You say why you're changing car, and your spots are held for 7 days; during that time you're paid and the business is billed as normal.
- Remove the stickers before the buyer takes the keys — it's a ten-minute job per door done properly; the full walkthrough is in removing a Lunar sticker cleanly. Send the removal photos: a person approves them, and you're paid for a sticker you've stopped carrying once they do.
- Expect a check on day 7 — the same photos and odometer reading as the weekly check. If you're verified, you stay; if not, pay stops, the spots are released and the business is rematched.
- That's it. No fees and nothing to return.
What happens to the campaigns you were carrying
Each sticker on your doors represents a local business's campaign running its 3-month phase. When your spots are released, Lunar rematches those businesses to other verified cars. A business isn't charged for days no car is carrying its sticker, and nothing falls on you. This is worth knowing because it removes the guilt question drivers sometimes carry: leaving mid-phase doesn't strand the bakery whose sticker you liked. The system re-routes around your exit by design — that's how the matching works.
Your money: what gets paid and when
Pay is per sticker, on its own 30-day clock, and goes out monthly through Stripe. While your spots are held for those 7 days you're paid as normal, and once a person approves your removal photo you're paid for any sticker you've stopped carrying. Leaving closes the account once that approval is in and your final pay is settled. What you won't get is pay once the day-7 check can't verify you: if that check fails, pay stops. The payout details live on the earnings page.
Replacing the car: re-qualifying is quick
- Your new car qualifies on the standard checklist: 12 years old or newer, valid licence and insurance, its own real VIN, not commercial-registered or already wrapped.
- New car means new stickers — decals are printed and matched per vehicle, so fresh ones ship to you and go on with a new install photo. Don't try to transfer old vinyl between cars; peeled decals don't re-stick properly, and the install photo wouldn't verify anyway.
- Your zones and brand preferences carry over with your account, so the matching picks up your history rather than starting cold.
- Expect a short gap between cars — printing and shipping take a bit — and then earnings resume per sticker exactly as before.
The special cases, quickly
- Trade-ins: same as a sale — strip the decals on your driveway the day before, not in the dealership lot while the sales manager waits.
- Total loss or write-off: notify us with what happened; there's nothing to remove if the car's gone. Re-qualify the replacement whenever you're ready.
- Selling to family: if the car stays insured and driven by you, nothing changes; if it's genuinely theirs now, they're welcome to apply as a driver themselves — with their own licence, insurance, and account.
- Taking a break instead: there's no pause button — a week without the weekly check counts as a missed week. If you're going car-less for a season, use the leaving steps above; there's no fee.
The bottom line
Lunar is built around driving you already do — and when the car you do it in changes, the program flexes with you. Remove the stickers cleanly, tell us, collect your verified earnings, and re-qualify the next car when it arrives. No deposits at the start, no fees at the end: that's the shape of the whole deal, on purpose.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a fee for leaving Lunar when I sell my car?
No fee. Tell Lunar why you're changing car; your spots are held for 7 days and you're paid as normal in that time. Your account closes once a person approves your removal photo and your final pay is settled.
What happens to the businesses advertising on my car?
Lunar rematches them to other verified cars. A business isn't charged for days no car is carrying its sticker, and nothing falls on you.
Can I move my stickers to my new car?
No — decals don't survive re-application, and verification is per-VIN. Your new car re-qualifies (12 years or newer, insured, real VIN) and fresh stickers ship to you; your zones and preferences carry over.
Do I get paid for my final partial month?
Pay is per sticker on its own 30-day clock. You're paid as normal while your spots are held for 7 days, and you're paid for a sticker you've stopped carrying once a person approves the removal photo.
